Things to Know About Medical Imaging
Medical imaging is any of a range of tests that are used to create an image of a part or area of the body. There are many different types of imaging, including X-rays, CT scans, MRI, ultrasound, and even mammograms. Each imaging type uses a different technology to create an image. These images help your physician or medical staff to better see and understand what is happening inside your body. Your doctor may use medical imaging to help:
• Screen for possible health conditions before symptoms appear, allowing for early detection of any problems, often while they are still easily treatable.
• Diagnose the cause of symptoms you are currently having, along with determining the severity or benign nature, quickly and accurately – often in a much less invasive way than exploratory surgery.
• Monitor existing health conditions, or examine whether current treatments for these conditions are working.
• An imaging test should only be performed if it’s likely to help your doctor with diagnosis or improve the management of your health condition or injury.
